Reserve cave entry before planning the drive
A timed-entry reservation is required year-round to enter Carlsbad Caverns. It costs $1 per person through Recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777, and it is separate from the $15 entrance fee. Pass holders and children who enter free still need reservations.
Reservations become available 30 days ahead. Same-day reservations remain available until 7 am Mountain time. Enter between the reserved time slot and 2:30 pm. A reservation controls the entry time; it does not replace the entrance fee.
Cave hours make this a morning commitment
The visitor center is open from 9 am to 5 pm. Entry through both the Natural Entrance and the elevator runs from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, and the last ticket is sold at 2:15 pm. Natural Entrance hikers must be out by 3:30 pm. The last elevator leaves the cave at 4:45 pm.
The park is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. These hours mean the cave cannot be started late in the afternoon. Build the day around a morning or early-afternoon entry slot.
The Big Room and Natural Entrance
The cave stays at 56 F and remains humid year-round. A light jacket is advised even when the surface is hot.
The Big Room is the largest single cave chamber by volume in North America. Its mostly flat loop covers 1.25 miles and takes about 90 minutes. A shortcut reduces the walk to roughly 45 minutes.
The Natural Entrance route descends about 750 feet over 1.25 miles. The National Park Service compares the descent to walking down a 75-story building. It is extremely steep, takes about an hour, and is not advised for people with heart or respiratory conditions.
Allow 2.5 to 3 hours to complete both routes. That estimate still has to fit inside the cave-entry and exit windows.
Check elevator status when mobility depends on it
Elevators carry visitors into the cave from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm, with the last car out at 4:45 pm. The park’s elevators have a documented outage history. The primary elevators, installed in 1955, were out of service from 2015 to 2018.
When elevators are unavailable, the steep Natural Entrance becomes the only route in or out. Calling 575-785-2232 to confirm current elevator status is a reasonable precaution before a mobility-dependent visit.
Ranger tours in the 2026 schedule
The King’s Palace tour costs $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 15. It is scheduled Thursday through Tuesday at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, but operates only when staffing is sufficient. Tickets are sold at the front desk on the day of the tour.
The Lower Cave tour is scheduled on Wednesdays at 9:30 am. Children under 6 are not allowed on ranger tours.
Bat Flight Program
Brazilian free-tailed bats are present roughly from April through October. The free evening Bat Flight Program takes place at the natural-entrance amphitheater at dusk during the season. The 2026 calendar shows programs beginning May 30.
The National Park Service says the best flights are usually in August and September, when pups join the colony. Electronics of every kind are prohibited during the program, including cameras and phones.
Early risers can watch the bats return at dawn. The bats dive back into the cavern at 25 mph or more. In winter, the colony is in Mexico rather than at Carlsbad Caverns.
Above-ground stops
Rattlesnake Springs is a spring-fed oasis and historic district about 10 miles from the main park. It is a premier birding day-use area.
Walnut Canyon Desert Drive is a 9.5-mile one-way gravel loop. It was closed for flood damage at the latest check, so verify its current status before treating it as part of the visit.
Reaching the visitor center
The visitor center sits seven miles up the entrance road from US-62/180 at Whites City. The city of Carlsbad is about 20 to 25 minutes away, and El Paso is about 2.25 hours away.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas is roughly 40 minutes south of Carlsbad Caverns. The short distance makes the two parks a natural same-trip pairing, but Carlsbad’s timed entry still controls the cave day.
